Agri Ministry plans new certification system for organic cotton, derivatives
Several organizations in the country have been demanding an “Indian Standard for Organic Textiles”. Without a proper standard, the textiles made of organic cotton stay unprotected. Meaning, the exporter or the seller is unable to prove that the textile is made from organic cotton. To solve this problem, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare is planning on launching a certification system that will provide an organic tag to cotton produced without using chemicals and fertilizers.
What is the plan?
The Ministry is to form a committee that will look after the concerns in certified organic cotton. The committee will provide suggestions about the certification system. How the system should be constituted? What issues will it address? The Ministry has requested the committee to provide information on the coverage of organic cotton in the country. Also, the committee will collect details of private firms and individuals involved in the organic textiles business.
What is the status of Organic textiles in India?
Today there are no standards to organic textiles in the country. However, business circles are using the standards like Global Organic Textiles Standards and Textiles Exchange standards. The reach is not wide and is only used by very few in the country.
