National Level Digital Extension Platform
The Extension workers are those people who are involved in the education programmes in a field. In the agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, or poultry sector, the extension workers teach farmers on new farming techniques, and strategies to increase their income. They can be from NGOs or government appointees. To make education materials easily available to them, the Agriculture Ministry is launching a digital library.
About the Digital Library
It is being launched under the MoU signed between the Agriculture Ministry and a private firm called Digital Green. The library is to be created in the PPP model. It will be multi-lingual.
Significance
The digital library will aid the Government in making the extension programmes highly successful. GoI is taking extensive measures to develop the food processing sector and to integrate technology into the agriculture sector. To achieve this the role of extension services are very important. Drip irrigation has been highly successful in the country because of these extension services. Today, India has more than two lakh extension service workers in the country. Their livelihood are highly dependent on agriculture and allied sectors. The National Digital Platform is expected to create innovative connections with the farmers. Also, it will lay a strong foundation to build a Digital Agricultural Ecosystem in the future.
