Jal Jeevan Mission achieves 11 crore tap water connections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently applauded the Jal Jeevan Mission for achieving 11 crore tap water connections. The mission was announced by the PM in 2019. The main objective of the mission is to provide tap water connections to every household in India. And the target is to be achieved by 2024. For this mission, GoI allocated Rs 3.5 trillion. It is being implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Funds for the mission
The Central and State governments are sharing the funds for the project. The ratio of their fund sharing is 50:50. In the northeastern states, it is 90:10. The North East state share 10% of the funds.
Reforms planned under the mission
- Under the mission, GoI will shift its focus from “Habitations to Households”. That is, rather than looking at the size of the land, the government will take steps based on the size of the population
- Service delivery will be the focus
- 50% of the members of the Village Water and Sanitation Committee will be women
- Community ownership to be encouraged’
- Focus on public utility
- Potable drinking water will be delivered to localities with contaminated groundwater.
- Technology will be used to implement the scheme and therefore there are no issues of transparency and accountability
