Discuss the issue of technology-facilitated abuse. How can India ensure a safe digital space for its women?
Online communication increases information production and dissemination, allowing people to establish more worthwhile connections. But these connections might potentially put them in danger, especially in the case of women.
Technology-facilitated abuse:
- Online leaks of young women’s private images are common. It might be due to a hacked account or a strained relationship.
- It should come as no surprise that young men and women are experimenting with new methods to express their sexuality through sharing personal photographs. New types of abuse have been produced as a result of these new societal standards, and often, women are the ones who suffer.
- Numerous studies have shown that online abuse frequently has offline effects and repercussions.
Need for safe digital space:
- More than half of young women, according to a poll, have encountered violence online, such as sexual harassment, threatening comments, and the sharing of private photographs without permission.
- More often than most, abuse was directed at women’s rights activists and journalists.
- The impact of online sexual harassment on their mental health and well-being may have long-term consequences.
- The goals of the internet and digital dividend cannot be realized until sexist online harassment is addressed.
Way forward:
- For cybercrime against women, the IT Act has specific provisions.
- The security and safety of users, especially women and children, are a priority for new IT regulations.
- In order to address the needs of students who are most prone to become victims of online abuse, gender-sensitive and customized methods are required.
- It’s important to elevate the conversation in society about abuse made possible by technology.
