One Earth, One Family, One Future” has been given as the theme of India’s upcoming G20 presidency. Comment on the significance and opportunities associated with it.
The G20 presidency of India will begin on December 1st, 2022, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already unveiled the logo, website, and theme for the presidency.
The theme of G20 “one earth, one family, one future” is in sync with India’s values and traditions of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
Significance:
- India’s G20 leadership coincides with its growing confidence, which is matched by its expanding prominence and strong economic growth rate.
- India can serve as a voice for the developing countries during its G20 chairmanship.
- South-South collaboration is something India is firmly committed to pursuing.
- It has the potential to lead to new multilateralism and a reevaluation of the Global Financial Order in order to enable enough credit enhancement and blended financing for long-term green transformations.
- The philosophy of peace and non-violence, the legacy of Buddha and Gandhi, is the foundation of PM Modi’s recent advice to President Putin, “Now is not the time for war.”
- India is seriously committed to going digital. Growingly, the developing world is taking notice of the nation’s outstanding achievements with the Unified Payments Interface, Direct Benefits Transfer, and Aadhar authentication in welfare schemes.
- Modi presented Mission LiFE, which puts human behaviour at the centre of the global climate action, at the COP26 in Glasgow. Indian leadership on climate change was established by Modi’s “Panchamrit” declarations at COP26.
Opportunities:
- The G20 presidency will present India with a chance to add momentum to several of its programmes for clean energy cooperation, particularly in solar, wind, and hydrogen, with the EU, Japan, and the US.
- It will serve as a platform to advance India’s “One Sun, One World, One Grid” concept, which was first proposed at the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in 2018.
- To ensure equitable access to vaccine production, India has made a strong case for a TRIPS waiver by providing more than 250 million vaccine doses to 101 countries, apart from other medical assistance during the pandemic.
- The Indian presidency should represent the broadest and most disadvantaged constituencies. Additionally, it can progress the economic integration of South Asia, which is crucial for India’s growth.
Way forward:
The world needs a new sense of hope and a direction based on moral principles, away from mercantilism, the pandemic’s misery, war, and ideological strife. This is truly India’s moment.
