Background

World Space Week was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 6, 1999 to commemorate the contributions of space science and technology towards human development. It is the largest space sector-related event in the world. It is coordinated by the UN in collaboration with the World Space Week Association (WSWA) to provide a unique outreach and education in space sector. The week commemorates the launch of first manmade Earth satellite, Sputnik-1 on October 4, 1957 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. Every year, a theme is chosen by the World Space Week Association (WSWA) Board of Directors in close coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs. The theme guides the overall celebrations of the World Space Week across the globe.

UN Office of Outer Space Affairs

The United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is an office in UN secretariat that promotes and facilitates the peaceful use of outer space. It is the secretariat for the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) – the UNGA’s only committee exclusively dealing with multilateral cooperation on the peaceful use of outer space.
