K Subramaniam: Executive Director (India) at IMF

Former Chief Economic Adviser of India K. Subramaniam was recently appointed as the Executive Director of India at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He will replace Surjit S Bhalla, who was appointed as India’s executive director on the board of the IMF in 2019.

K. Subramaniam’s tenure in this post will start from November 1, 2022 and will continue for a period of three years or till further orders, whichever is earlier.

K. Subramaniam holds an MBA in Financial Economics and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His PhD was completed under the supervision of Luigi Zingales and Raghuram Rajan. He is also an alumnus of IIT, Kanpur where he studied Electrical Engineering as well as Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Subramaniam is currently a Professor at the Indian School of Business. He was the youngest Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, serving from 2018 to 2021.

Imf Executive Board

The IMF’s Executive Board is based in Washington and is responsible for conducting its day-to-day business.

Composition: The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is made up of 24 directors (called executive directors or EDs), who are elected by member countries or groups of countries. It is headed by the Managing Director (MD) who acts as its Chairman.

Tasks: The Executive Board meets several times each week and performs its work on the basis of papers prepared by the IMF management and staff.
