India-Bangladesh cross-border logistics of containerised Cargo

India and Bangladesh have successfully completed the first “Cross-border logistics of Containerised cargo” through inland waterways of “Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route for Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages”. It has been completed by A.P. Moller – Maersk.

  • The cross-border logistics of containerised cargo provides new opportunity for customers to avail the faster, and more reliable inland waterways solution connecting both the countries.
  • Maersk has transported 50 containers from Kolkata (India) to a river port near Dhaka (Bangladesh). It was transported on a barge on Indian side National Waterways 1.
  • Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route has provided trade opportunities for both the countries in last decades.
  • With the advancement towards containerised transport through this route, opportunities for importers and exporters are being expanded from both sides.
  • Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route also extends the connection to Bhutan.
  • Maersk provide an option of end-to-end integrated logistics solution, through which customers would be able to move their cargo from origin to destination by utilising the first-mile and last-mile services.

The cross-border logistics containerised cargo is significant because, the delivery schedule of the cargo via transhipment hub used to be affected with delays. Under the new mechanism, the delivery speed over inland waterways is going to benefit both the countries.

Cargo movement through inland waterways or rivers is reliable, specifically in monsoons. This is because, turbulent weather causes delays when goods are transported through ocean. The ocean network runs under capacity pressure. Thus, alternative inland waterways are being welcomed by shippers as it is quicker and more reliable.
