What is the reason for this trend?

The NSO report does not highlight any reason for the increasing trend. However, according to government officials, it was highly due to “lifestyle and influence of celebrities”. In modern lifestyle, being unmarried or becoming single mother or father is a new trend. This trend is being followed when sex ratio of total population has increased to 1020 in the 5th National family Health Survey, as compared to 991 in 4th round of survey.

Declining youth population

According to NSO report, population of India had reached 1211 million in 2011. It is likely to reach 1363 million in 2021. Population in India was youngest worldwide, with 27.3 percent of the population accounted for people aged 15–29 years. However, the report notes that, during 201-2036 population pyramid of India will shift in terms of absolute numbers, because of decreasing fertility rate and increasing life-expectancy.
