On the 22nd of May, the International Day for Biological Diversity is observed annually across the globe. This day is observed to generate awareness about the biodiversity issues that are overwhelming the world.

Why is biodiversity essential?

In the year 2000, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated 22nd May as the International Day for Biological Diversity. After the United Nations conducted the “Earth Conference” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the year 1992, special emphasis was given to conserving and protecting the environment. Following that conference, on 29th December, Biodiversity Day was observed till the year 2000. In 2000, the date of the observance was changed to 22nd May.
