Notes:- The Geneva Conventions comprise of three protocols and four additional treaties that set the standards for ethical treatment in war. The Geneva Convention originated in 1864 but finalised in 1949. The first Geneva Convention protects wounded and sick soldiers on land during war. The second Geneva Convention protects wounded, sick and shipwrecked military personnel at sea during war. The third Geneva Convention applies to prisoners of war. The fourth Geneva Convention affords protection to civilians, including in occupied territory. India ratified the Geneva Convention in 1950, becoming the 5th country in the World and the first country in the region to adopt and implement legislation for the 1949 Conventions.
- The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court is the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC). It was adopted at a diplomatic conference in Rome on 17 July 1998 and it entered into force on 1 July 2002. India is not a party to Rome Statute along with US and China.
- The Montreux Convention regulates maritime traffic through the Black Sea. It guarantees “complete freedom” of passage for all civilian vessels during peacetime and permits Turkey to restrict the passage of navies not belonging to Black Sea states. It is an international agreement governing the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits in Turkey.
- The Convention on Cluster Munitions is an international treaty that prohibits all use, transfer, production, and stockpiling of cluster bombs, a type of explosive weapon which scatters submunitions over an area. India is not a party to this Convention.
