History of this day

After the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution to celebrate this day, this day came into existence. On 27th April 2017, the UN General Assembly passed the resolution, and the first World Creativity and Innovation Day was celebrated in the year 2018. This day was founded on 25th May 2001 in Toronto, Canada by Marci Segal, a Canadian woman. In the year 1977, she was studying creativity at the International Center for Studies in Creativity. She decided to come up with this day after seeing a headline stating Canada in Creativity Crisis, which appeared in the country’s National Post newspaper. Segal believed that generating new ideas and making new decisions with the help of creativity can help people in tackling various crises.

Significance of this day

The United Nations always urges its member nations to make creative and cultural industries a part of its economic growth strategies. The UN states that creativity, innovation, and mass entrepreneurship can provide new opportunities for job creation and economic growth.
