Advisory Committee for Semiconductor Mission

An advisory committee of experts has been formed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This committee has been constituted to carry forward the government’s plans of making India a global leader in the manufacturing, innovation, and design of semiconductors.

Overview:

  • The newly constituted advisory group of experts comprises established academicians, senior government officials, as well as industry experts.
  • On 15th December 2021, the Semicon India Programme was approved by the government with a financial outlay of INR 76,000 crore.

About the Semicon India Programme

The Semicon India Programme was approved for the development of semiconductors and to display the manufacturing ecosystems over the time period of the next six years.

About India Semiconductor Mission (ISM)

Within the Digital India Corporation, a dedicated India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has been set up to enhance the country’s strategies for the development of display ecosystems and semiconductors. The aim of this scheme is to make India a global electronics hub as the microchips shortage is hurting the production in the IT industry.

Importance of semiconductor chips

Semiconductor chips are required for building home appliances, electronics, medical equipment, and automotive.

Working of the advisory committee

The Advisory Committee will help the executives at ISM reach their goals of enhancing the country’s semiconductor mission in an efficient, systematic, and strategic manner. This committee will also give recommendations on building display ecosystems and semiconductors in India. The mission of this committee is to provide inputs to build a resilient supply chain, financing mechanisms, investment promotion, innovation, research, global engagement, and IP generation for display ecosystems and semiconductors. They will also be providing plans to support MSMEs and start-ups.

Head of the committee

The Advisory Committee will be headed by the Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The convenor of this committee will be Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary, MeitY.
