International grants in news
A grant is a fund given by an entity (public body, charitable foundation, etc) to an individual or another entity for a specific purpose linked to public benefit. Unlike loans, grants are not to be paid back.
Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant
- MCC is an independent U.S. foreign aid agency established in 2004 by the U.S. Congress.
- It is to offer time-limited grants promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, and strengthening institutions, to low and lower-middle-income countries.
- The selection process involves evaluating the country’s performance on 20 policy indicators ranging from control on corruption to government effectiveness.
- It was originally proposed post the 9/11 terrorist attack as a tool to counter global poverty and international terrorism, as poverty and terrorism are linked.
- On February 27th, 2022, the Nepal parliament approved the MCC Nepal Compact (a $500-million grant) for electricity transmission and road development projects. The compact says the energy project will facilitate cross-border electricity trade with India.
Crafting Futures: India-UK Collaboration Scheme 2022
- On February 3rd, 2022, British Council announced another set of grant winners for its global program ‘Crafting Futures: India-UK Collaboration Scheme 2022.
- Under the program, the grants are awarded to a partnership of two organizations, one in India and one in the UK, to jointly strengthen the creative & crafts sector in India.
- Under the second round of the program, applications were invited for project proposals from India and the UK organizations, out of which three projects have been chosen.
- The partnerships between the following organizations were also shortlisted for grants:
- Jaipur Rugs Foundation from India and University of Arts, London.
- Indian Institute of Craft and Design (IICD) in Jaipur and West Dean College of Arts and Conservation in the UK.
- The University of Liverpool in the UK and INTACH Hooghly Chapter in India.
Grants won by Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA)
- JSIA under OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has been awarded two foreign grants.
- In 2021, JSIA won a prestigious grant from the USA for delivering a high-quality massive online open course (MOOC) on ‘Understanding US Foreign Policy & US-India Relations’.
- In 2022, JSIA was awarded a grant by the government of Australia, under the ongoing Australia-India Indo-Pacific Ocean initiative, for analyzing different aspects of Integrated Maritime Management and Security across the Indo-Pacific region.
India also gives grants to many countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka to build public infrastructure.
