Monuments and World Heritage Sites in Ukraine
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has put at risk not just physical infrastructure and human lives, but also priceless works of art, monuments, and cultural artefacts.
Overview:
- Several historical sites and heritage structures can be found in Ukraine, and its museums have significant specimens of Baroque and folk art.
- Thousands of museums in Ukraine contain important works of Ukrainian and Russian art, as well as Byzantine and classical artefacts and paintings by painters like Francisco Goya, Giovanni Bellini, and Jacques-Louis David.
- Around 4,000 artefacts from Ukraine’s pro-democracy movement are on display at Kyiv’s Museum of Freedom.
- The Odessa Fine Arts Museum in the city centre of Odessa has more than 10,000 objects, including Ukrainian and Russian orthodox icons dating back to the 16th-century artists such as Myhailo Vrubel, Ivan Aivazovskyi, Mykola Reryh, Valentyn Sierov, Kostiantyn Somov, Zinaida Serebriakova, and Vasyl Kandynskyi.

About St. Sophia Cathedral & Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
St. Sophia Cathedral, which dates to the eleventh century, holds one of the world’s largest collections of unique frescoes and mosaics from the first quarter of that century. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is an Orthodox monastery near Kyiv founded in 1051 by monks Theodosius and Anthony. It is an important landmark of Ukrainian and international culture. The monastery became the centre of Christianity in Kyivan Rus in the eleventh century.
About Lviv Historic Centre Ensemble
Lviv city’s whole ancient part has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has never changed its name since it was founded in 1254. Lviv has the most architectural monuments of any city in Ukraine. The ensemble of Rynok Square, the Town Hall, the Kornyakt Palace, the Black House, the Royal Arsenal, the former Dominican Church, the City Arsenal, the Powder Tower, the Latin Cathedral, the Bernardine Monastery, St. George’s Cathedral, etc are some examples.
About Struve Geodetic Arc
The ‘Struve Arc,’ a cross-border scientific and cultural heritage object, consists of 258 triangles that create a chain of 256 main points. The chain is 2820 metres long. Due to the arc, the correct shape and size of Earth were established and Newton’s theory that Earth is a three-dimensional oval was also proved.
About Virgin Beech Forests of the Carpathians
This site has undisturbed samples of temperate forest that show how European beech expanded postglacially from a few isolated refuges in the Alps, Carpathians, Dinarides, Mediterranean, and Pyrenees. In 2007, this site was originally listed as the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and was shared by Ukraine and Slovakia.
About Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans
In the late 19th century when the region was under Austria-Hungary’s rule, the Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans was built for the Eastern Orthodox metropolitan bishop. Josef Hlávka, a Czech architect, designed it in the historicist style, the features of Byzantine, Gothic, and Baroque architecture are combined. Until World War II, the structure served as the bishop’s house. The property was given to Chernivtsi University in 1955.
About the Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora
The city was founded on the Black Sea coast by Dorian Greeks in the 5th century BCE. In the centuries that followed, the city witnessed the Black Sea region’s interactions of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine civilizations. In the 15th century, it was abandoned. Wine production was prominent in the area around the city, and remains of ancient vineyards are preserved.
About Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Ukraine and Poland
In the Carpathians, there are 16 wooden churches (tserkvas), eight of which are in Ukraine. In the 16th and 19th centuries, the churches were built by the communities of Greek Catholic and Eastern Orthodox faiths. The designs have been influenced by Orthodox ecclesiastical traditions with local influences.
