75th Anniversary of Bureau of Indian Standards

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) came into existence in January 6, 1947. In 2020, BIS celebrated its 75th anniversary. During the anniversary celebrations, the Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs Shri Piyush Goyal provided five growth mantra.

Five Mantras

  • To grow in future
  • To develop a global organization by learning and integrating global standards and experiences
  • To work on gap analysis and also to assess laboratory attesting needs
  • To set up high quality modern labs. And also maintain quality of products at effective cost
  • To bring in “One Nation One Standard” and establish standard revolution

About BIS

It operates under Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. It was established under BIS Act, 2016.

Regulatory Framework

National Building Code of India

It regulates building construction activities. It provides detailed guidelines for maintenance, construction of buildings. This includes placements of garages, kitchen, electric line distances, water tank measures, etc.

Indian Standards Act, 2015

The BIS was established as the National Standards Body of India. It enabled the GoI to make hallmarking of precious metals mandatory. It also enabled the Government to make the certification regime mandatory for services and processes related to health, environment and safety.

What is the difference between ISI and BIS?

ISI is Indian Standards Institute.

  • BIS: Standardization, Quality certification and testing
  • ISI: TO certify standards

Functions of BIS

To formulate, recognize and promote standards. It provides product certification for Indian manufacturers, foreign manufacturers, Indian importers. As of 2019, BIS formulated 20,000 standards.

  • NITS: National Institute of Training for Standardization: It is a training programme for developing countries.
  • Laboratories for testing chemical products, electrical and mechanical products.
  • Small Scale Industry Facilitation Cell
  • Grievance Cell
  • Collaboration with International standard bodies
