The Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2021 report

The Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2021 report was released by the United Nations. According to the report, the hunger in Caribbean and Latin America was at its highest since 2000. Between, 2019 and 2020 hunger in these regions increased by 30%. The report is a regional report and it targeted only Latin America and Caribbean and the results are shocking!

What are the key Findings?

  • The number of people living with hunger increased by 13.8 million. It reached to 59.7 million.
  • Between 2014 and 2020, the number of people living in hunger increased by 79%.
  • One in four adults in the region suffer from obesity. The prevalence of obesity in Caribbean region increased 9.5% and the prevalence of obesity in South America increased by 7.2%.
  • The overweight in children has been increasing in the region for the last 20 years. Around 3.9 million children face overweight issues.
  • Stunting has reduced. In the last 20 years, stunting decreased from 18% to 11.3%

Gender Inequality in Food Security

The Food Insecurity has affected the men and women unequally. Around 41.8% of women and 32.2% of men experienced moderate to severe food security. This inequality has been rising in the last six years. However, in the last two years, the rise has been greater. In 2019, it increased by 6.4% and in 2020 it increased by 9.6%.

Latin America and Caribbean

  • These two regions are most affected by hunger issues as compared to the rest of the world. Around 9.1% people in these regions are hungry.
  • Between 2019 and 2020, the prevalence of hunger in these regions increased by 2%.
