CADWM Scheme
CADWM is Command Area Development and Water Management Scheme. It was started in 1974 – 75. The main aim of the scheme was to bridge the gap between the irrigation created and utilized. From 2015, this scheme was brought under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana.
What is the new objective of CADWM?
Around 88 new projects are included in CADWM under PMKSY. These projects aim to enhance utilization of irrigation potential of the country. Thereby, it aims to improve agricultural production.
How is the new CADWM implemented?
The scheme chooses selected areas. A multidisciplinary team is formed under an Area Development Authority. The authority leads the implementation of the project works under the scheme. Such chosen areas are called Cultural Command Area. So far, the scheme has completed 28.45 million hectares of Cultural Command Area.
Indira Gandhi Canal implemented under the scheme
In 1974, it implemented Indira Gandhi Canal Command Area. Indira Gandhi canal is the longest canal of India. It starts from Harike Barrage and takes water to the irrigation facilities in Thar Desert. Earlier, the canal was called the Rajasthan Canal.
CADWM under 12th five year plan
During the 12th five year plan, the program was implemented with accelerated irrigation benefits programme.
What are the main projects undertaken by the scheme?
- Rotation system of water distribution: The small and marginal farmers usually get less water as compared to the big farmers. The rotation system of water distribution brings in equality.
- The field drains and field channels were constructed to reduce water pilferages.
- The land levelling is done under the scheme for uniform spread of irrigation water in the field.
- To demonstrate and train farmers in new technologies
- To construct chak roads
- To promote forestry, animal husbandry, poultry, processing facilities
- To diversify agriculture
- To provide more emphasis on cultivation of pulses, oil – seeds and green manure crops
