Clean Ocean Manifesto
The Clean Ocean Manifesto consists of list of activities and goals that will help in achieving clean ocean. The manifesto was presented by the UN Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
What is Clean Ocean Manifesto?
There are two main aims in the manifesto. They are reducing marine debris by 50% to 90% and creating high tech system of monitors.
What are the objectives of Clean Ocean Manifesto?
- To enlarge understanding pathways about the pollutants
- To reduce top – priority forms of pollution such as marine debris as much as 50% to 90%
- To reduce and prevent sources or emission of pollutants. For instance, discarded plastic, anthropogenic noise, harmful chemicals, farming practices that add harmful sediment outflow.
- To improve the outcomes of control measures. Eg: decreasing amounts of mercury in tuna, eutrophication and die – offs in marine life.
- To improve monitoring of marine pollution. This includes accurate, timely, precise, comprehensive real time tracing of spills.
- To improve systems that provide timely warning of pollutants increasing and emerging
- To accelerate the adoption of technologies that promote clean ocean. This is to be done by using efficient motors, map marine pollutants, monitor and progress towards a clean ocean and use better technologies for emergency clean up
- To improve national mechanisms for control and prevention, lift compliance with international treaties and align financial incentives
- To increase public engagement
