Kittur Karnataka
The Kittur Karnataka region comprises of Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Gadag, Bagalkote and Haveri districts of Karnataka. Earlier, it was called the Mumbai Karnataka region. In November 2021, the Karnataka Government renamed the region as Kittur Karnataka region.
About Kittur Karnataka
The region was renamed by the State Government of Karnataka to fulfil the long-standing demand of the people in the region. The demand was mainly raised by the pro-Kannada organizations. The name Kittur comes from a historic taluk in the Belagavi district. Kittur was ruled by the Marathas in the 18th century. After the third Anglo Maratha war, it came under the suzerainty of the Britishers. Later it came under the control of Mallasaraja. Mallasaraja and his son (the only heir to the throne) was killed by the Britishers. After that his wife Rani Chennamma ruled Kittur in the 19th century. She adopted a boy and announced him as the heir to the throne. The Britishers did not agree to this under the Doctrine of Lapse. According to Doctrine of Lapse, if a kingdom is with no king or a blood related heir to the throne, then it comes under the direct rule of the Britishers. And no adopted heirs are allowed. She fought against the Britishers for implementing Doctrine of Lapse.
Hyderabad Karnataka
In 2019, the then State Government of Karnataka renamed the Hyderabad – Karnataka region as Kalyana – Karnataka. This region comprises of Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Gulbarga, Vijayanagara, Bellary and Koppal.
