Garbh Choire Mor
The Garbh Choire Mor is a Corrie located in Scotland. It is called the snowiest corries in Scotland as it holds snow even during summers. Corrie is a landform formed by glacial erosion.
About Garbh Choire Mor
- The Garbh Choire Mor is concave in shape. Its floor ends up in a bowl-shaped convergence zone. Here the ice converges from different directions. It is located at a height of 1,296 metres.
- The Garbh Choire Mor holds a hollow called “Sphinx”. The Sphinx is filled with ice. It is not a glacier. It is a snow patch. Apart from Sphinx, the Garbh Choire Mor holds another snow patch called Pinnacles.
- The snow in the Sphinx has disappeared only eight times in 300 years. Recently, it vanished completely in November 2021. Earlier, the snow melted in 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017 and 2018.
- It is believed that Garbh Chorie Mor had a glacier in the 19th century
- Since 1960s, the snow in Garch Choire Mor has been melting frequently.
- It is a part of the Cairngorms.
Cairngorms
The Cairngorms is a mountain range located in Scotland. The Cairngorms National Park is located in this region. It has highest mountain peaks of Scotland such as Ben Macdhui, Braeriach, Cairn Toul, Cairn Gorm, etc. It holds some of the longest snow patches. Other than Sphinx in Garbh Choire Mor, the snow patches in Cairngorms are Ben Macdui, Ciste Mhearad. The Cairngorms were formed 40 million years ago. This is before the last ice age.
