National Rail Plan
The Indian government published the draft National Rail Plan. This document seeks to fill certain gaps in the Indian rail system and sets various targets that are to be achieved.
The National Rail Plan aims to offer a long-term perspective plan to strengthen the rail network in India. The vision of the National Railways Plan is to develop infrastructures and capacities and increase the share of rail freight transport. By the year 2030, capabilities will be developed to meet the growing demand.
Objectives
- Build capacity ahead of demand by the year 2030, which in turn takes into account demand growth by the year 2050.
- As part of a national obligation to increase the modal share of rail from the current 27% to 45% in rail traffic goods by the year 2030.
- To reduce and continue to maintain CO2 emissions.
- Annual growth forecast for passenger and freight traffic until the year 2030 and ten-year until the year 2050.
- Development of strategies based on both commercial policy programs and operational capacities so as to increase the modal share of railways in freight traffic.
- By increasing the average speed of freight trains from the current 22 km / h to 50 km / h, the transit time of freight traffic will be significantly reduced.
- Reduce the total cost of rail transport by almost 30% and pass these benefits on to customers.
- Identify future bottlenecks based on the previous simulation.
Vision 2024
As part of the National Railways Plan, Vision 2024 was launched to accelerate the implementation of certain critical projects by 2024, such as:
- 100% electrification by the year 2030.
- Multiple monitoring of congested routes.
- Speed increase to 160 km / h on the Delhi to Howrah and Delhi to Mumbai routes.
- Speed increase on all other Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal routes to 130 km / h.
- Elimination of all level crossings on all other Golden Quadrilateral and Golden Diagonal routes.
The NRP has been drafted to plug the various shortcomings of the Indian railway and to improve the services provided by this organization.
