The Supreme Court through this a portal intends to use machine learning to deal with the amount of data received regarding the various cases. It is a hybrid system and a perfect combination of human intelligence and machine learning that works wonders in combination with human intelligence. The AI-controlled tool is designed to process only information and make it available to judges for decision. It does not participate in the decision-making process. Only judges of the Bombay and Delhi High Courts dealing with criminal matters would use it on an experimental basis.
Significance of this portal
The Supreme Court or the judiciary of India itself has adopted Artificial Intelligence. However, the decision making intervention by the artificial intelligence would not be tolerated. According to data released by the National Judicial Data Grid, around 3.81 crores cases are still pending in various Taluka courts and districts. More than 1 lakh of cases are over 30 years old. Several district courts have a cumulative increase of 18.2% from 2019 to 2020. The higher court filing rate increased by 20.20% and 5.29% in the year 2018-19
Artificial intelligence in the judiciary would be useful to automate day-to-day processes. Legal teams would handle a large amount of data and process information. The implementation of AI would be useful to reduce dependency and allow better and faster processing of information.
