National Road Safety Board

In order to promote road safety, innovation and the introduction of new technologies, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has notified the Constitution of the National Road Safety Board.

Key Highlights

  • The regulations regulate the eligibility and the composition of the members and the president of the council, the mandate, the selection process, the revocation and resignation procedure, the meetings of the council, the functions and powers of the council, etc.
  • According to the rules of procedure As determined by the ministry, the headquarters of the board would be located in the National Capital Region and the Board of Directors may establish offices elsewhere in India.
  • The National Road Safety Committee is made up of the president and at least three, but no more than seven members appointed by the central government.

Why was this board established?

The body was established to formulate traffic management, specific standards for road safety and road construction for mountainous regions, as well as guidelines for skill development by traffic police,capacity building, road authorities, hospitalauthorities, and others.Likewise, it will provide technical assistance and advice to local authorities as well as governments on various issues regarding traffic management and road safety. The board of directors will also promote “Good Samaritans”, best practices in the areas of road safety and traffic management, as well as new vehicle technologies in the area of ​​vehicle technology.

Coordination with others

Coordination with international organizations and conducting research to improve traffic management, road safety and accident investigation are some of the other tasks of the Committee.

Good Samaritans Scheme

The good Samaritans scheme has been launched by MoRTH. The program will come into effect on October 15, 2021 and will run until March 31, 2026. The program provides a cash reward of Rs 5,000 to those who save the life of a traffic accident victim by admitting them in hospitals within the “golden hour” of the accident. Cash prizes are awarded to motivate the general public to assist traffic accident victims in emergency situations. The cash award is also accompanied by a certificate of appreciation.
