International community to provide $1.2 billion for Afghanistan Humanitarian Crisis

The international community has announced about $1.2 billion in aid for Afghanistan humanitarian crisis.

Highlights

• On the occasion, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres underlined the importance of engaging with the Taliban in order to ensure continued humanitarian assistance in India.
• He also highlighted the importance of addressing other concerns like terrorism, human rights and nature of the government.

High-level ministerial event

• United Nations organised a high-level ministerial event in Geneva on September 13, 2021 on the issue of humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
• UNs highlighted the acute needs in Afghanistan and underlined the urgent funding support & actions by international partners in order to support the people of Afghanistan.
• N. agencies and non-governmental partners also launched a flash appeal and asked $606 million for remaining months of year 2021 in order to bring relief to 11 million people in Afghanistan.
• About $1.2 billion in humanitarian & development aid was announced by member States, including the funding for flash appeal and regional response.

Why engagement with Taliban was emphasised?

U.N. chief emphasised on engagement with Taliban and the de facto government in country, because their cooperation is needed to provide humanitarian assistance inside Afghanistan. He also noted that it is important to engage with the Taliban at for all other aspects that concern the international community, including the terrorism, human rights, drugs, or the nature of government.

Interim government in Afghanistan

The Taliban had announced an interim government led by Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund who is the chief of the Taliban’s decision-making body ‘Rehbari Shura’. He is the acting prime minister and Abdul Ghani Baradar is the deputy prime minister in the new Islamic government.
