Discuss the meaning of defamation?

Defamation is defined as the publication of a statement which tends to lower a person in the estimation of right-thinking members of society generally, or which tends to make them shun or avoid that person. So, injury to one’s reputation has been termed as defamation. For, historical reasons defamation takes the form of two separate torts, libel and slander.  It is libel if the statement be in permanent form and slander if it consists in significant words or gestures.
