What is Haemophilia?

• Haemophilia is a rare disorder where the human blood does not clot normally. This is because, the blood lacks sufficient blood clotting proteins.
• It is an inherited genetic disorder.
• Women rarely suffer from the disease.

World Haemophilia Day

The day is being celebrated since 1989 by the World Federation of Haemophilia. Every year several iconic structures in the world are lighted in red to raise awareness and help those affected by the disorder.

Why is World Haemophilia Day celebrated on April 17?

The day is celebrated on April 17 to commemorate the birthday of Frank Schnabel. Frank founded the World Federation of Haemophilia.

World Federation of Haemophilia

It was founded in 1963. The headquarters of the World Federation of Haemophilia is located in Montreal, Canada.

Significance

75% of the people affected from bleeding disorder do not know it. Several others do not receive proper care. Therefore, it is essential to celebrate the day and increase awareness about the disease.

GoI measures on Haemophilia

• The National Blood Transfusion Council has instructed to the states and union territories that patients suffering from haemophila, sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia should be provided with blood free of cost. The National Blood Transfusion Council operates under National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).
• The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram was launched by the National Health Mission. It provides early detection and treatment of children suffering from genetic disorders such as Haemophilia.
