Garhwal Himalayan forts

Garhwal Himalayas is a heavily mountainous region in Uttarakhand. It derives its name from ‘Garhs’ or forts that had been built in the region. These are medieval forts that were built in the 8th century CE at various altitudes. These were developed as networks by ancient rulers and were used to relay information of enemy attack using smoke or fire signals. According to a recent study, these forts were built during the reign of Katyuri Dynasty between 8th and 12th century CE.
