Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act

The Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act is a legislation that seeks to maintain status quo in places of worship. It was passed in 1991 to maintain these places’ ‘religious character’ as it was in 1947. The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute is an exception to this law as it was already under litigation. The law prohibits the conversion of these places of any religious denomination into a place of a different religious denomination. The Supreme Court had recently agreed to examine the law.
