Red Road
Red Road is a tarred road in Kolkata that was laid in 1820. The road connects the west gate of Fort Williams and the Eden Gardens. It is also known as the Indira Gandhi Sarani. Originally, it was laid using red gravel for surfacing (later replaced by tar) and was also referred to as ‘The Course’ or ‘Secretary’s Walk’ in the colonial era. It was mainly used for horse driven carriages. It was also used as a runway for small airplanes in British India.
