UN released commemorative stamp on 40th anniversary of Small Pox Eradication
On May 9, 2020, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Postal Agency released a commemorative stamp to mark 40th anniversary of eradication of small pox.
Highlights
The World Health Organization small pox eradication campaign was initiated in 1967. In 1980, the organization officially declared that the world is free from small pox.
Small Pox in India
Small pox was is now an eradicated disease in India. India eradicated small pox due to the small pox eradication programme of the WHO. In 1974, India was one of the highly affected countries of small pox in the world. It had over 86% of world small pox cases. With the help of WHO, India started “TARGET ZERO”.
The programme was established in 1958. However, due disagreements between Indian Government and WHO, it was implemented in 1974.
Lessons for COVID-19 from Small Pox
In the case of small pox, WHO did not have funds to fight against the disease in 1967. Therefore, the first and foremost step in fighting COVID-19 is raising funds.
