Wheat Procurement Season begins amidst COVID-19 crisis

Every year, wheat procurement begins by April first week and mustard procurement by last week of March. However, this year, due to lock down and COVID-19 crisis, the procurement process has been delayed by 15 days.

Highlights

The Food Corporation of India transported 50,000 metric tonnes of rice and wheat out of Punjab through special trains. This has been done to allocate space for the wheat to be procured.

Punjab alone has storage capacity of 235 lakh metric tonnes. Of this 100 lakh metric tonnes of storage is being used for rice and 75 lakh metric tonnes for wheat.

Wheat Production 2020-21

Wheat Production is estimated to be at all an all time high of over 106.21 million tonnes. This is mainly because the acreage in all these major wheat growing states is high. The three states namely Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana account to 90% of wheat production in the country.
