April 9: CRPF Valour Day

Every year, April 9 is being marked as CRPF Valour Day all over India. The day is also called “CRPF Shaurya Diwas”.

Why Valour Day?

A small contingent of the CRPF on April 9, 1965 fought against Pakistan in Rann of Kutch eliminating 34 Pakistan soldiers. This was the first time a full-fledged infantry brigade fierce fully and successfully fought against the Pakistan army. During this battle, six CRPF men lost their lives. In order to pay tribute to these brave men, the Valour Day is being marked every year.

Achievements of CRPF

The CRPF personnel guarded India-Pakistan border till 1965 after which the border security force was created. The CRPF killed all the 5 terrorists who attacked Indian Parliament in 2001. Currently, the counter insurgency operations in India are being undertaken by CRPF personnel. In 2008, a CRPF wing called Commando Batallion for Resolute Action was created to counter Naxalite movement in the country.

International Missions

The CRPF were deployed in Sri Lanka for peace keeping actions. They have been deployed in Maldives, Somalia, Namibia, Haiti as a part of UN Peace keeping mission. Under Haiti Mission, they helped to contain political stability in the country. A fully formed Female Police Unit was deployed under Liberia Mission in 2007.
