- First woman to became Chief Election Commissioner of India.
- Chief Election Commissioner from November 26, 1990 to December 11, 1990.
- She was succeeded by T. N. Seshan.
- Till date, she is the only woman to hold the post of Chief Election Commissioner of India.
- Governor of Himachal Pradesh July 1997 to December 1999
- Governor of Karnataka from December 1999 to August 2002
