Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi sworn in Nepal Prime Minister amid protest

image Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Nepal. President Ram Baran Yadav admistered the oath of office to him. Regmi will continue to hold the position of the Chief Justice without actively engaging in the day to day affairs of the court.

Regmi will head an interim government that will hold elections in three months, ending a long political deadlock in the country.

Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi took the oath of office of the Prime Minister of Nepal  just 2 hours before the Supreme court of Nepal was to take up for hearing two cases challenging the appointment of an incumbent CJ as the head of the Executive as well.

  • This is for the first time in the political history of Nepal, that a sitting chief justice is being named as the head of the government.

Regmi’s government’s key tasks will be:

  • To hold elections by June 21, 2013
  • To choose a new Constituent Assembly to write a constitution.
