Cabinet approves MoU signed between India and Cambodia

On October 29, 2020, the union cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding signed between India and Cambodia on cooperation in the field of medicine and health.

Key Highlights

The MoU will increase the cooperation between the countries through joint initiatives and technological developments in health sector. Also, it will strengthen bilateral ties between the countries.

Main areas of Cooperation

The main areas of cooperation included in the MoU are family planning, mother and child health, technology transfer, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis, Epidemiology and Public Health, Disease Control, medical education, training in clinical, management skill and para-clinical, health manpower development and drugs and pharmaceuticals.

India-Cambodia

The Cambodia is a South East Nation. Just like India, the country also joined Non-Aligned Movement. In 1993, India provided several aids to the country to conduct UNTACT elections in Cambodia. India also agreed to preserve the Angkor Wat temple after Government of Cambodia appealed to India in 1986 and in 1993. It is to be noted that Cambodia is aligned more with China historically.

Angkor Wat

It is a temple complex in Khmer, Cambodia. It is the largest religious monument in the world by land area. The temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. However, it gradually transformed to Buddhist temple by the end of 12th century. The temple became the symbol of Cambodia and also appears in its National Flag.

Agreements

In 2018, India and Cambodia signed four agreements during the visit of Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen to India. The countries then signed agreements in prevention of human trafficking, cultural exchange programme, mutual legal assistance treaty in criminal matters. India also agreed to provide line of credit of 36.92 million USD for water development projects in the country.

Theravada Buddhism is the official religion of Cambodia.
