India beats China to become Member of UN’s Commission on Status of Women
India has recently been elected as one of the members of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW) which is a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India will be a member for four years from 2021 to 2025.

- Membership to India now endorse India’s commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all the endeavors.
- India, Afghanistan and China had contested the elections to the Commission.
- India and Afghanistan won the ballot among the 54 members.
- China could not win the ballot.
Commission on Status of Women (CSW)
- It is the global intergovernmental body which is exclusively promote gender equality and empower the women. It is a functional commission under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
- CSW was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) which was passed on 21 June 1946.The body promotes women’s rights, document the reality of women’s lives throughout the world and set a global standard on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
- The Commission also contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which helps to accelerate the realization of importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
- Priority theme for 2020 is to Review and appraise the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, and to contribute towards the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
- It is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations.
- The body is responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization.
- It is the central forum to discuss international economic and social issues and formulate policy recommendations.
- One four-week session in July is held every year.
- 45 member states of the United Nations serve as members of the Commission one time.
