First ever RORO service flagged off

Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa recently flagged off first-ever Roll-On-Roll-Off (RORO) service of South Western Railway between Nelamangla in Bengaluru and Bale near Solapur in Maharashtra through video-conferencing.

What is RORO service?         

Abbreviated form of Roll On Roll Off service, RORO service is combination of best features of road and rail transport. It is a concept in which an open flat railway wagon carries road vehicles loaded with various commodities. With minimal handling transported by fat and direct rail link, it offers door to door service. Road transport, increases traffic on roads which leads to congestion and delays to passenger vehicles. Further adding to this, delays at interstate check posts contribute to increased travel time. This is where Railway came to rescue it will provide hassle free and environmentally friendly transport to medium to large quantum of freight. Having said, Rail transport is most fuel efficient of all means of transport and is much safer than road it will be a great boon for MSME’s.

Advantage of RORO Service

RO-RO model proves vital for many transporters. It is a multimodal delivery model with added benefits. It enables faster movement of goods and essentials.  The major advantage of this new service are:

• Faster movement of goods and essentials, which eventually reduces time taken by trucks to reach destinations due to traffic congestion in between cities.
• It will save precious fuel thus reducing carbon footprint.
• Big relief from toll & check posts also big relief to truck drivers and labors as it avoids long distance driving.
