India topped the list of the number of organic farmers and in terms of the total area under organic farming, it ranked 9th. North Eastern state Sikkim set a record by becoming the first fully organic state in the world and other states like Tripura and Uttarakhand have set similar targets.
What are the key factors for the development of organic farming in India?
- The Government had launched Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOVCD) and Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in 2015 to encourage the farmers to adopt organic and chemical-free farming.
- The Agri-export Policy, 2018 also provided an impetus to the organic farming sector in India.
- The uninterrupted certification and market targeting
- The system under the Participatory Guarantee System and National Program for Organic Production developed the organic Production.
Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)
Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojna (PKVY) is a sub-component of the Soil Health Management Scheme under the National Mission of Sustainable Agriculture(NMSA). The objective of the scheme is to develop organic farming through a mix of traditional modern science, ensuring long term soil fertility, resource conservation, and adaptation against climate change.
Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region
It is a Central Sector Scheme under the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture with the aim of the development of organic farming in the North East Region of India.
