National clinical registry of COVID-19 patients to be rolled out by ICMR
The Indian Council of Medical Research, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, is planning to roll out a project to create a database of the COVID 19 patients admitted in various hospitals across the country. The main objective of this project is to improve the way these patients are being treated and also to devise an approach to make the treatment process better.
This national clinical registry is also expected to serve as a crucial platform to conduct clinical trials to study the effectiveness of new therapies being used as part of treatment for this deadly virus.
Approx. 15 organizations are slated to come together for this project so that a robust and comprehensive network can be created across the country. It is awaiting a clearance from the common ethics committee of the ICMR as of now.
How will it help?
- It will provide data regarding demography specific information such as mortality rate with respect to sex of the patient and also mortality by time.
- Data would also be collected to understand the potential interventions required at very important points to save a patient.
- New therapies would also be tried based on this for novel clinical trials.
- It will also collect data on how other approaches such as changing the posture of the patient or providing oxygen at a certain time would help improve outcomes for COVID 19 disease.
