Weavers Samman Yojana launched by Karnataka

On July 6, 2020, the state Government of Karnataka launched the “Weavers Samman Yojana”. Under the scheme, 19,744 handloom weavers will be assisted financially.

Highlights

The State Government under the new scheme will transfer Rs 2,000 to the weavers’ accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer. In order implement the scheme, the state government has allocated Rs 10.96 crores.

There are around 1.25 lakhs of weavers in Karnataka.

Weavers schemes in Karnataka

The Karnataka State Government had already announced Rs 109 crores for the loan waiver scheme of weavers. In 2019-20, Rs 29 crores were released and the remaining Rs 80 crores was released during COVID-19 crisis in June 2020.

These steps are being done to reduce distress of weavers community due to lock down.

Other measures

The State Government had also waived monthly fixed charges of electricity bills of MSMEs. This helped the weaving industry largely including the handloom sector. A one-time compensation of Rs 5,000 was provided to the auto and taxi drivers.
