AMRUT scheme completes 5 years of success
On June 25, 2020, the AMRUT scheme completed its 5 years of successful implementation. In order to commemorate the success of the scheme, the Ministry of Urban Affairs launched an online event. The event highlighted the success of AMRUT.
Highlights
The event highlighted the success of AMRUT in achieving 54 milestones in 4 years of its implementation. Around 11 reforms were introduced in the scheme to strengthen its capacities at city level institutions.
The success of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban and Smart City Mission was also celebrated during the event.
AMRUT
AMRUT is Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. It was launched in June 25, 2015 with the aim of
- Universal coverage of drinking water
- Improvement in treatment capacities of sewerage
- Non-motorized urban transport system
- Improvement in storm water drainage
Achievements
The Government of India has so far allocated Rs 39,011 crores for drinking water supply projects and Rs 32,546 crores for sewerages and septage projects under the scheme.
The scheme has provided 79 lakhs of household tap water connections and 45 lakhs of sewer connections.
The scheme promoted energy efficiency by replacing 76 lakhs of street lights with energy efficient LED street lights.
Success
The scheme achieved 54 milestones during its working period. This helped India rise to 27th position in the World Bank Doing Business Report, 2020.
The Credit Rating exercises that were conducted in 469 of the 500 targeted cities of the scheme said that 163 cities are on Investible Grade.
