World Malaria Day Observed on April 25th

World Malaria Day was observed recently on April 25th by the WHO. On the occasion, the ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me’ campaign was promoted.

Malaria

Malaria is a mosquito borne disease caused by a parasite called Plasmodium. It is an infectious disease with symptoms like fever, vomiting, headache and tiredness and in more severe cases, yellow skin, coma and even death. It is typically spread through the Anopheles mosquito which injects the parasites into the blood.

About World Malaria Day

The World Malaria Day is an initiative of WHO, observed across the world on April 25th every year to raise awareness about the disease and the efforts against it. It is one of the 8 global public health campaigns observed by the WHO.

Zero Malaria Starts with Me

At the 2020 event, the ‘Zero Malaria Starts with Me’ campaign was promoted. It is a grass-root level campaign which seeks ‘to keep malaria high on the political agenda, mobilize additional resources, and empower communities to take ownership of malaria prevention and care’.
