National Panchayati Raj Day
24th April is observed as the National Panchayati Raj Day or National Local Self Government Day. It marks the vesting of constitutional status on the Panchayati Raj institution.
About the Day
The National Panchayati Raj Day is observed on April 24th every year. It is also known as the Local Self Government Day. It was celebrated for the first time in 2010. It marks the vesting of constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj institution by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992 that came into force in 1993.
Panchayati Raj
The Panchayati Raj system is one of the oldest forms of local government practiced in several countries like Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka apart from India. It is a 3 tier system comprising of Gram Panchayat, Panchayati Samiti and Zila Parishad.
Awards
On occasion of the Panchayati Raj Day, the following awards are conferred on best performing Panchayats:
- Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar for all three levels of Panchayats.
- Nanaji Deshmukh Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar to Gram Panchayats for outstanding performance of the Gram Sabha.
- Gram Panchayat Development Plan Award for three best performing Gram Panchayats.
