International Girls in ICT Day

The ITU recently organised the International Girls in ICT Day on April 23rd to empower girls to enter into the ICT sector and it hosted an online dialogue ‘Girls in ICT: Inspiring the Next Generation’.

About the Day

The International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative of ITU that is observed on the 4th Thursday of April every year. It is aimed at creating awareness about the need to promote ICT (information and communication technology) career options among girls and women.

ITU

ITU or International Telecommunication Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is one of the oldest global international organisations. It is concerned with issues concerning ICT. It was established in 1865 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Functions

  • Coordination the sharing of radio spectrum.
  • Promotion of international cooperation in assigning orbits for satellites.
  • Supporting the development of telecommunication infrastructure in the developing countries.
  • Coordination of technical standards, etc.
