Zakat
The Grand Mufti of Dubai announced that the zakat for this year can be paid to COVID-19 patients and disadvantaged persons in the form of food and urged the people of UAE to support the 10 million meals campaign.
About Zakat
Zakat is a religious obligation under Islamism, next in importance only to prayer (or salat). It is a type of alms-giving and is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam. The zakat given by a person is based on the value of his/ her possession.
Fatwa
Fatwa is a non-binding legal opinion on Islamic law given by a jurist called mufti by a process called ifta. 5 fatwas were issued by the UAE Fatwa Council on fasting during this Ramdan. These were issued with the consideration of the pandemic situation in mind: performing of Taraweeh and Eid Al Fitr prayers at home, non-fasting by those affected with COVID-19, non-congregation for Friday prayers and permission to pay Zakat earlier.
10 Million Meals Campaign
The 10 million meals campaign is UAE’s largest food distribution drive and it was launched recently in light of the COVID-19 crisis. It was launched to provide food security to people affected by COVID-19- especially the low income families.
