World Autism Day observed on April 2nd

The World Autism Day was observed on April 2nd amid the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. The theme for 2020 is ‘Transition to Adulthood’.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the nervous system and the brain. Though its exact cause is unknown, autism is supposed to be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Some of its symptoms are difficulty in social interaction, repetitive behaviours, impaired communication, etc. The symptoms start appearing in childhood and progresse without remission.

World Autism Day

World Autism Day is observed every year on April 6th. The 2020 World Autism Day was observed on the theme of ‘Transition to Adulthood’. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007. It is one of the 7 official health specific UN days.

Indian Government’s Initiatives for Autism

The Indian government has several programs for aiding autism patients:

  • National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities
  • Samarth Scheme: provides residential services.
  • Gharaunda (Group Home and Rehabilitation Activities for Disabled Adults)
  • Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme
  • Vikaas Day Care
  • And concessions in travel, taxation, etc.
