About the Day
March 20th is observed as the World Sparrow Day every year. The day is designated so to raise awareness about the once very common bird. The day is also about raising awareness about the other bird species found in urban environment.
Nature Forever Society
The observation of World Sparrow Day was an international initiative of the non-profit NGO, Nature Forever Society along with other national and international organisations world-wide. The Nature Forever Society was started by Mohammed Dilawar, a conservationist who had featured on Time’s ‘Heroes of the Environment’ list in 2008.
Reasons for Decline in Sparrow Population
The sparrows are on the verge of extinction. Some of the reasons are:
- High pesticide use
- Change in building patterns
- Lack of gardens in houses
- Radiation from mobile and TV towers which affect their navigation, etc.
