Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

2020 marks the 100th birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Yet the celebrations in Bangladesh were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is considered as Bangladesh’s ‘Jatir Pit’ (Father of the Nation). He was also conferred the title of ‘Bangabandhu’, meaning Friend of the Bengal. He was the first President of Bangladesh. He had also served as the country’s Prime Minister.

Mujibism

The term ‘Mujibism’ is used to describe the political views of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It has 4 fundamental policies: nationalism, socialism, democracy and secularism. In 1972, when the country adopted its Constitution, these four policies became the fundamental state policies of Bangladesh.

Assassination

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on August 15th 1975 by a group of army officers. His family and personal staff were also murdered along with him. However, his 2 daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana survived the coup as they were visiting West Germany at the time. Sheikh Hasina is the current Prime Minister of the country.
