Rampur, Uttar Pradesh

After the Supreme Court’s ruling on the succession of the private properties of Nawab Raza Ali Khan last year, the evaluation process of the inheritance is being conducted amidst the erstwhile royals’ fighting.

Rampur City

Rampur is a city in Uttar Pradesh. It is noted for being the only Muslim majority district in the state. It is called the ‘City of Nawabs’. It was a princely state that was merged with India on May 15th, 1949 (one of the first kingdoms to do so).

History

Rampur State was founded by the Rohillas- Nawab Ali Muhammad Khan. Rohillas were rulers of North India who originated from Afghanistan. They took power when the Mughal Empire was declining in the 18th century. They took over the control of Katehr (also known as Rohilkhand).

Supreme Court Ruling

The panel looking into the succession issue in 2019 observed that the rule of primogeniture (meaning the right of succession belongs to the first born child) does not apply to succession of private properties of a former ruler. The bench directed that the Muslim Personal Law Application Act of 1937 would apply instead.
